When it comes to monster lifts, it is hard to pass by Nathan Edwards. Being able to deadlift 250kg at the age of 17 is a feat that will make anybodies eyes open! Right then and there people knew this kid had something special.

It is lifts like this that brought Nathan to our attention. Picture this, we were at the 2003 CAPO National Powerlifting Championships watching this young 19 year old attempting an opening 260kg squat. Damn, we thought. But unfortunately for him he was given a ‘failed lift’ as it was deemed he didn’t go low enough. A group of other juniors came out and lifted (no where in this weight range). Then he came back on stage to attempt 280kg. We all went damn, again! On the way up he faltered and took a slight step back and was given a ‘failed lift’ (can’t make any steps until the judge indicates you are allowed). We all shook our heads. Then the rest of the junior field cycled through again. As we waited we began discussion what this young guy was going to do, ‘most likely he will go for 280kg again, he can’t risk another failed lift’. Then to our astonishment he stepped up onto the stage again, this time to attempt 300kg. We all looked at each other and in unison let out a DAMN! This guy was going for broke. If he failed this lift not only would he bomb out of the squat section of the comp with no lifts, but he could say good-bye to his total count as well as his chance to take out the National Title. The room went silent except for his coach that slapped him around a bit and yelled out words of encouragement. Then he lifted the 300kg off the rack took his position and lowered this huge amount of weight to depth. With his face turning a bright red and veins bulging from his neck and forehead, he let out a loud grunting scream and heaved that 300kg up. The crowd released their collective breath as he racked the bar. Right at that moment, we knew we had to get this guy on board and we did! And that is how Nathan Edwards became associated with Muscle Genesis, and we are sure glad he has!
